After having braved Moscow and St Petersburg for the last 10 days, we are now in Helsinki, which, though only 2 hours away from the former Russian capital, feels like it's a continent away! We have a million or so photos to choose from, but first, an apology for the lack of correspondence from the Rus, owing to extortionate internet cafe prices and shortage of time! To whet your appetite for our forthcoming report, take a look at my flickr site (following the link on this page) to view some of our exploits in Moscow. And now, back to Finland, where, contrary to western European stereotypes, the people are the warmest on the planet! Our host in Couch Surfing gave us a royal welcome, with bilini (pancakes, popular in both Finland and Russia) and a tour of the city, where we experienced Helsinki's 'alternative' culture in 'Reclaim the streets', a biannual street party where dreadlocked hippies, flare jeaned hipsters and arty types like ourselves overrun a commercial street in the city centre, guzzling the cheapest Finnish beer (confirming at least one stereotype about Scandinavia, that alcohol here is very expensive) whilst dancing to Reggae beats! We're off now to see what else Helsinki has to offer, and tomorrow we'll hitchhike to Tampere (which can't possibly be more interesting than hitchhiking from Moscow to St Petersburg...but from on that later), catching a flight back to Germany on Wednesday, giving us a week to share with you the sights, sounds, smells (and everything else we promised you) in great detail!
Til the next time...your brave and fearless reporters!
